Our Branch History

Hepworth Opticians started in 1961 at Greenough St, Scholes, Wigan when Milton Hepworth, who was qualified both as a pharmacist and an optician, began testing eyes at the back of his chemist's shop.

In 1963, a second pharmacy was added at 69 Ormskirk Rd, Newtown where Alan Hall was the pharmacist manager. This shop too was extended to offer sight-testing at the rear. The Hepworth and Hall partnership was formed in 1966 when another chemist/optician's shop opened in Atherton.

About The Team

Optometrist Brian Gleave joined the team in 1978 as Milton Hepworth moved into semi-retirement. The Pemberton optical practice was opened in 1983. Optometrist Chris Jones began working at Pemberton in 1994. The Hepworth & Hall Pharmacies were sold in 1995 but the optician's, which by then had moved out of the chemists, continued. Alan Hall retired in 2005 and Brian Gleave took over the Atherton, Newtown and Pemberton practices. Brian's son David qualified as a dispensing optician in 2010.

Barnes Hazel Opticians in Hindley was added to the group in 2012, along with optometrist David Edwards. In 2016, Janet Green brought her skills as a behavioural optometrist to the group, specialising in dyslexia and visual stress with a specific interest in children's eyes.
